The third in a series of roundtable video conference discussions on contemporary politics in Kyrgyzstan—organized by the Institute for War and Peace Reporting office in Bishkek and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington—focused on the October 10 parliamentary elections.

If the Kyrgyz parliamentary elections were held today, six out of 29 political parties running campaigns would win election to parliament, according to a new public opinion poll.

Responding to Russian President Dmitri Medvedev’s skepticism, President Roza Otunbayeva confirmed her confidence in Kyrgyzstan’s upcoming parliamentary elections and the path of parliamentary democracy chosen by the Kyrgyz people in the June referendum.

Kyrgyzstan asked for Russia’s assistance with organizing overseas voting in the October 10 parliamentary elections for Kyrgyz nationals residing in Russia.

The Ar-Namys (Dignity) party was founded in 1999 by Felix Kulov. After the April 2007 uprising, the party remains in opposition.

Out of 57 parties officially registered by the Kyrgyz Central Election Committee to take part in the election, only 30 parties will be allowed to participate. Those parties fulfilled an election requirement to hold nominating conventions to select candidates for the new Jogorku Kenesh by August 30.
