Chairman of the Central Elections Committee Akylbek Saryev dismissed the idea today that the Kyrgyz government will conduct a repeat of this month’s parliamentary elections if serious mistakes are found in the vote-counting verification process.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) must become a real instrument for guaranteeing security.

Ambassador Robert O. Blake, U.S. Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs, presented an overview of the current U.S. policy towards Kyrgyzstan. Additional recommendations were offered by Carnegie Senior Associate Dr. Martha Brill Olcott.

Melisbek Myrzakmatov, the mayor of Osh, spoke out against the international police force to be sent there by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Citing the opinions of the majority of Osh residents, the mayor said the situation can be resolved internally.

The first session of the joint Kyrgyz-Kazakh working group for cooperation and reconstruction of Kyrgyzstan’s southern regions took place in Bishkek on July 15.

On July 15 Kyrgyzstan took several significant steps in its efforts to restore public confidence in the south by announcing national and international investigations into the June violence. The two investigations would work in cooperation with each other.

The cash-strapped Kyrgyzstan continues to struggle with its grim humanitarian situation in Osh and Jalalabad, where the government now faces massive reconstruction costs.

International reaction to the referendum has been largely positive.

Presidents Obama and Medvedev should be seeking the advice of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan’s presidents with the aim of working together to form an international action plan on Kyrgyzstan.
