The Kyrgyz government will support victims of recent political and ethnic violence in Kyrgyzstan and their families, according to a newly signed decree from President Roza Otunbayeva that details victims’ compensation and assistance.
Assistance will be provided to Kyrgyz citizens who were hurt and to families of those who perished in the public uprising of April 6-7 in the Talass region and the city of Bishkek, and the following pushback of May 13-14 in Jalalabad, as well as the June ethnic violence in Osh and Jalalabad.
Assistance will include monthly payments ten times the amount of guaranteed minimum income, medical care, subsidized medication, free prosthetics and equipment, and vouchers for treatments at therapeutic resorts and facilities.
Older children will be given preferential access to high school and college education in public schools and universities, while younger children will be given priority access to child-care and kindergarten facilities.
Local administrations will be empowered to determine additional social benefits for the victims and their families, including supplemental cash payments, free housing, interest-free mortgages, and free public transportation.
Victims of the recent violence will also be excluded from the draft.
These social benefits will be paid for by the federal and local budgets, as well as other, non-governmental financial sources.
