Background on Omurbek Tekebayev

Omurbek Tekebayev

Acting Deputy Chairman of the Provisional Government of the Kyrgyz Republic (Constitutional Reform), 2010 – Present

Born in 1958 in the southern region of Jalal-Abad, Tekebayev has a degree in physics and a law degree from the Kyrgyz State National University. In February 1991 he became of the founders of the Erkin Kyrgyzstan National Democratic Party, and in 1992 he founded the Ata Meken party. He served in the Kyrgyz parliament in 1995-2005, and following the 2005 overthrow of president Askar Akaev was elected speaker of the new parliament, but resigned in February 2006.

Since February 2007 Tekebayev has been involved with the For Reforms! Movement and the United People’s Movement.

Brief Biography and Major Political Highlights:

  • From April 7, 2010 – Acting deputy chairman of the provisional government of the Kyrgyz Republic
  • September 2006 – Arrested in Warsaw after Polish customs officials found heroin in his luggage, acquitted within days with the Polish court citing possible political setup
  • 2000-2005 – Member of the parliament
  • 2000-2001 – Deputy speaker of the parliament
  • 1995-2000 – Member of the parliament, chairman of the Committee for state building and the rule of law
  • 1995 – Ran for the presidency of the Kyrgyz Republic
  • 1992 – Founded the Ata Meken party
  • 1991 – Elected to the Supreme Council of the Soviet Union
  • February 1991 – One of the founders of the Erkin Kyrgyzstan National Democratic Party
