Akayev was born on 1944 in the northern village of Kyzyl Bayrak. He is a graduate of the Leningrad Institute of Precision Mechanics and Optics. In 1981 he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and became a member of the CPSU Central Committee in 1990.
In October 1990 Akayev was elected president of Kyrgyzstan, reelected in 1991 after the country obtained independence, and continued to win the presidential elections of 1995 and 2000. After the parliamentary elections of 2005, marred by widespread violations, sparked protest and riots in major cities, Askar Akayev was forced to leave the country and resign.
